Description
Digital ink jet print 2014 20"x60". This is my red chair. I sit in my red chair quite often. When my mind races, when I can’t turn off my thoughts, I sit in my red chair. I sit in my red chair and I concentrate on my red chair. I concentrate on how it feels to hold my body up. I breathe. I concentrate on my breath. In. Out. In. Out. In. Out. Sometimes I hum. I hum a monotone hum. I feel the vibration of the hum in my mouth, in my face, and in my nose. I hit a pitch in my hum and hold it. I concentrate on one thing, something in the present-- not the future, not the past. I concentrate on “the right now.” This piece of work came together from wanting to record the shadows of an object throughout the day, and make a photograph of an object with no shadows at all. I decided I could use the image with no shadows to represent high noon. Next, what I needed was my subject, my chair. I was sitting in my chair when I thought of using it, and it all came together for me. Subsequently, I saw a metaphor for meditation, being in the moment or the right now. I used a 4x5 camera and studio lights to make the middle image, and the other four images were made with a medium format camera and a tripod. I setup the shot, and waited for the shadows, while sitting in my chair.
