Description

The aspects affecting cycling in New Orleans are the conditions of infrastructure, safety, and crime. This research is collecting data via an online form and analyzing where bicycle related incidents and thefts are occuring in the city of New Orleans, LA. The results of the ongoing research has shown that many crimes go unreported to the police and occur in high trafficed areas. Information available from the Louisiana DOT is being compared to the data collected. Researching the incidents & thefts that significantly affect the quality of life of cyclists is important so that citizens can advocate for improvements. Through research and community engagement Bike Easy is striving to assist the local government in order to improve cycling in New Orleans. The purpose of this research is to address the problems affecting cyclists and highlight the problem areas in order to focus advocacy. / / The reseach is being done through the local cycing advocacy group, Bike Easy. Those reports are compiled into a database. Researchers manage the database and generate statisctics. GIS is used to graphically represent the data. The goal is to assist advocating for cycling as an alternative form of transportation by sharing information and assisting the police in the recovery of a stolen bike. The Bike Easy Incident Map is providing a service for citizens by raising awareness of issues that affect cyclists on a daily basis.
