Abstract
Fanatic’s Prayer, a collection of poems by Julie Elise Landry, exposes an obsessive, ruminating mind that struggles to determine its place and identity in a disconcerting world. Through interpersonal analysis, earnest storytelling, and intrusive imaginings, these poems paint an intimate portrait of a neurotic person working to reconcile the conflicts within her while wrestling with guilt, loneliness, phobias, internalized misogyny, and a complicated familial legacy. As a prayer, the work petitions for understanding, certainty, connection, and ultimately, a unity of self. As a collection of poetry, Fanatic’s Prayer scrutinizes desire, self-regulation, and gender through lyrical and precise language.
