Description

During the past four decades, aquaculture of penaeid shrimp became a major industry providing employment oportunities for thousands. Vibriosis causes mortality for Litopenaeus vannamei, the Pacific white shrimp, in aquaculture. Failure of probiotics and vibriosis antimicrobic resistances allows for bacteriophage therapy as a viable option. Bacteriophage therapy is accomplished by the introduction of pathogen-specific virus to infect and lyse bacterial pathogens. We used V. parahaemolyticus (ATCCATCC 17802) as the host for the isolation of environmental bacteriophage. We isolated and triple purified bacteriophage isolates from oyster licquer. Ten of the twelve bacteriophage isolates showed lytic activity for isolates from an aquaculture outbreak.
