Description

Preoperative fasting is mandatory for surgical procedures to reduce the risk of aspiration. Many patients fast much longer than advised not realizing the potential complications that could occur from prolonged fasting such as drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and insulin resistance, thereby adding to perioperative stress. Often patients may fast longer than necessary because of improper education by healthcare professionals. Proper education and counseling related to NPO (nothing by mouth) after midnight are necessary for all surgery patients in order to prevent potential complications.
