Description
Agrobacterium tumefaciens causes crown gall disease in dicotyledonous plants. This gram negative, rod shaped, soil bacterium inserts a portion of its plasmid DNA into a wounded plant cell. Increased growth and tumors result from infection. A. tumefaciens affects a wide variety of plants, which poses a huge threat to the agriculture industry. Bacteriophages selectively infect bacteria and take over their replication system. A soil sample was collected on ULM’s campus and enriched to isolate possible A. tumefaciens bacteriophages. Lytic and lysogenic phages were present. We present the isolation, purification, and characterization of CD LY3, a lytic phage of Agrobacterium tumefaciens 15955.
