Abstract

Crowdsourcing contests have increasingly become a recognized sourcing mechanism for problem-solving and decision-making in organizations. The continued participation in crowdsourcing contests undoubtedly determines the success of the crowdsourcing platform. While previous studies have investigated a myriad of factors influencing individuals’ sustained participation in crowdsourcing contests, environment- and organization-specific factors have yet received little attention from researchers. The purpose of this paper is to fill this research gap by investigating how team ties, organization exposure, and experience with the organization can affect sustained participation in crowdsourcing contests. We conducted an empirical study using rich data set of 9,596 Individuals in 138 contests held in Kaggle.com, a crowdsourcing contest platform that hosts numerous organization-initiated crowdsourcing contests.

The study results suggest that team ties, organization exposure, and experience with the organization affect individuals’ sustained participation in crowdsourcing contests. Also, it reveals that the number of competitors and previous performance moderate the effect of experience with the organization on sustained participation.

This study suggests that crowdsourcing platform sponsors should focus on encouraging individuals to leverage crowd collaboration. Moreover, providing more information about the crowdsourcing organizations and creating a positive image of them, will result in sustained participation of individuals in the crowdsourcing contest platforms. This study advances our theoretical understanding of individuals’ sustained participation in crowdsourcing contests by focusing on environment-specific and organization-specific factors.
