Abstract

This thesis represents the first six chapters of a work in progress, a memoir in which the New Orleans French Quarter provides a pivotal backdrop for two very different coming of age experiences—both for the same woman. As a naïve young street musician in the 1970s, the narrator’s artistic struggles to break free of social and religious constraints are supported by the Quarter’s counter-cultural community. Forty years later, now an aging writer, the woman returns to the neighborhood determined to cast off the creeping accrual of convention threatening to hobble her final decades. The combined perspectives of the two narrators give a sweeping, in-depth view of a treasured American community and the life of a Southern creative.
