Abstract
Some project standards specify that grout be tested in accordance with ASTM C1019 “Standard Test Method for Sampling and Testing Grout for Masonry”. This is true even when the grout is not being used for the purpose of masonry construction, such as bridge riser bearing plates and anchoring applications, amongst others. In these instances, the grout compressive strength samples cannot be formed in accordance with ASTM C1019, as there are no masonry units.
The purpose of this project was to evaluate the accuracy of sampling grout in accordance with ASTM C109 “Standard Test Method of Hydraulic Cement Mortars (Using 2-inch Cube Specimens)”, for creating compressive strength samples with 2-inch brass molds instead of traditional prisms formed from masonry units (cubes vs. prisms). This project aims to establish a correction factor which can be applied to the 2-inch cube compressive strength results, in instances where casting traditional prisms is not feasible.
