Description
Lee Martin Abbott was born in 1981 and grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His parents both worked for Louisiana State University (LSU). He attended LSU, where he studied English and linguistics and became involved in student organizing with groups like the Student Environmental Action Coalition and the Baton Rouge Progressive Network. After college, he participated in the AFL-CIO's Union Summer program. He later moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for graduate school in English at UW-Milwaukee. There, he became a leader in his teaching assistants' union, AFT Local 2169, serving as co-president during the 2011 Wisconsin Uprising against Governor Scott Walker's Act 10. He moved back to New Orleans in late 2017, where he worked as an adjunct professor and a library associate for the New Orleans Public Library, becoming a key figure in the successful unionization effort of city workers.
