Abstract
This dissertation examines how government intervention shapes innovation in the U.S. pharmaceutical industry, with a special focus on pricing restrictions and subsidies. The first chapter studies whether the inflation reduction act (IRA), while intended to reduce drug costs, also affected pharmaceutical innovation. While the second chapter examines the impact of subsidies on innovative activities within pharmaceutical companies. Taken together, these essays show that government policies can have powerful effects on pharmaceutical innovation with pricing regulation weakening development incentives and subsidies playing an important role in fostering innovation.
